What do you think is the biggest climate challenge today?

The resumed fifth session of negotiations for a global treaty on plastic pollution is underway in Geneva from August 5 to 14, 2025. Over 3,700 participants from 184 countries and 619 organizations are aiming to finalize a legally binding agreement covering the entire lifecycle of plastics
. A major sticking point remains whether to cap plastic production, supported by more than 100 countries, versus a strategy favored by fossil fuel–producing nations (including the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Russia, etc.) that emphasizes waste management.
. Scientists warn that plastic pollution incurs a staggering US $1.5 trillion annual health cost, urging negotiators to prioritize human health in the treaty.

The talks in Geneva aimed at establishing a global treaty on plastic pollution collapsed. No limits on plastic production or regulation of toxic chemicals were adopted, due to opposition from oil-producing powers. Two draft texts were proposed but rejected. The consensus-based decision-making model is now being questioned, and the way forward remains uncertain.

Noam Yaron, a Swiss ultra-endurance swimmer and eco-adventurer, uses his strength and passion to raise awareness about the state of our waters. Through extreme challenges such as crossing Lake Geneva, the Odyssey of the Lakes, and his ambitious 180 km Mediterranean swim, he highlights water pollution and the vulnerability of aquatic biodiversity. His commitment goes beyond sport: he collects water samples for scientific research, campaigns against cigarette butts and plastics that can pollute up to 1,000 liters of water, and engages millions through viral campaigns. His message is simple yet powerful: protecting water means protecting life.

Climate emergency: only two years left to limit warming to 1.5 °C
Scientists warn that, at the current rate of emissions, the remaining carbon budget to keep global warming within the 1.5 °C target will be exhausted within two years. In 2024, the threshold was already breached. We are on track for a +2.7 °C rise, which would have catastrophic consequences — but every fraction of a degree matters.
International Court: countries must act against climate change
In a landmark opinion, the International Court of Justice stated that nations have a legal obligation to act collectively against the existential threat posed by climate change. This ruling strengthens the moral and political responsibility of states — especially toward vulnerable nations.
